Vicious, Sid - Final 24: His Final Hours

Very Interesting
These Final 24 movies are really good. I believe they are pretty accurate to what we have heard, and you also find out new facts surrounding these untimely deaths

I didnt know his mother killed him.
I love the final 24 dvds, I wish they had more about current celebrities and past as well. I loved this final 24 of Sid because surprisingly there was facts that I had never heard before, very surprised taht his mother had contributed to his death.

not bad
If you've followed the Pistols/Sid documentaries most of this film won't be new to you. The character does have an uncanny likeness to Sid. Frankly the constant closeups of shooting up were unnecessary and uncomfortable. The shocking ending is what changed my rating from 2 to 3 stars, and without a spoiler alert, it's one that you're not likely to forget whether you believe it or not.

Pretty Bird

A thoroughly engaging human saga
A Sundance Dramatic Grand Jury Prize nominee, Pretty Bird is an eyebrow-raising adventure of the lengths to which ordinary Americans may go to pursue their extraordinary dreams. When three unusual inventors - a charming entrepreneur, a compassionate mattress store proprietor, and a rocket scientist with a bleak worldview - team up to create a rocket belt company, the put everything they have on the line in hope of finding success. Pretty Bird blends skewed comedy, genuine warmth, and the drive to see the results of one's labor made real into a thoroughly engaging human saga. Highly recommended. 98 minutes, widescreen, rated R for language and a scene of sexuality.

"No one will doubt what you do..."
PRETTY BIRD (prod. Paul Giamatti, 2008) Ah, first reviewer. That has only happened to me twice before over the course of 120 film critiques (and counting). Pity it had to be this film.

I missed this in its maiden year, though I can't be sure it was released in theaters. I have to make an educated guess and say it was theatrically released. It would have been declared the biggest box office rip-off of all time if anybody had seen it. I recall seeing on the news a man flying a jetpack over the Swiss Alps. It was real, and it was cool. That popped into my mind as I suffered this film.

This film set in the present day purports to be a story about the building and testing of a jetpack. It even begins with a written 'history', describing Bell Labs' perfection of a working prototype and the military's rejection of it. It then goes on to say that hasn't stopped inventors from working on jetpacks (which they keep calling a "belt").

PRETTY BIRD proclaims itself...

PRETTY BIRD - PRETTY GOOD!
It's storyline is surprisingly close to the actual events of the TRUE STORY of the RB2000 Rocketbelt. It shows how money, power, fame, fortune and greed can twist and turn people against one another and change a wonderful dream into a total nightmare. Add to that the mufti-talented Paul Giamatti and actor Billy Crudup and the (underused) comedic antics of SNL's Kristen Wigg make Pretty Bird a very unique film that should have made it to the silver screen of the major movie theaters.

Twins

Great movie, So-So DVD
While this is a very enjoyable movie, the DVD doesn't have that same amazing quality of most DVDs. Still better than VHS, the DVD is too red and too noisy. There are no extras, no 5.1 audio, and no widescreen.

A Timeless Classic
This is such a great movie, but the dvd is really not too good. Like many other great older movies, the studio has not given this movie the proper dvd transfer that it diserves.

Superb Comedy With Devito & Schwarzenegger !
With this movie Arnold Schwarzenegger showed just how long those muscular legs are in terms of talent, range, and intelligence. This is a wry, wistful, and lovely movie that illustrates how easily Schwarzenegger could switch gears from the heavy action-oriented vehicles that had made him a star to more sentimental and purposeful films that intentionally made audiences both laugh and think. Indeed, hidden in all this well-choreographed slapstick is a self-deprecating kind of intelligent humor no one suspected the big guy to be capable of. Matched memorably with Danny Devito as the twin trapped with all the bad genetics even as Schwarzenegger ended up with the great genes and the life associated with it, the two work off each other in a movie so funny it is hard to try to describe.

Every thing about the sequences works, from Arnie's na

Don McKay

Black Comedy Thriller with a Slow Fuse
Don Mckay is an indie film that was only shown in seven theaters nationwide, but it's actually a good watch on DVD. What sets this film apart from other low-budget projects is that it features a great cast of veteran actors.

The movie starts off as a thriller with a slow fuse, with the film evolving into a black comedy in the final half hour. While Don Mckay isn't as well-written or interesting as a Coen Brothers film, it scores points for throwing the audience curveballs. I thought the story was obvious and predictable, until the conclusion approached. There's simply no way that you can predict how the story will unfold or conclude.

The best part of Don Mckay is the cast. Elisabeth Shue is gorgeous as Sonny, Don Mckay's old girlfriend who conveniently wears seductive sleepwear for most of the movie (I'm not complaining). Keith David (the Imam in Pitch Black) gives a nice performance as Mckay's buddy Otis Kent, though he unfortunately doesn't get much...

Where's David Lynch When You Need Him?
This is pretty much an oddball film but it's played too straight to pull off the oddballishness. Others have recounted the story so I won't bother. It IS a noir genre piece with a real cock-eyed approach. The first two acts are something you'd expect from David Lynch but they don't have Lynch's sense of quirkiness so you might find yourself scratching your head trying to figure out what the director was going for.

This is Thomas Hayden Church's production so he must have seen something here. The question is what. He must have also seen something in the McKay character but that seems elusive as well. He wears a particular expression on his face throughout nearly the entire movie but I can't quite pin it. Is he dumb? Is he dumbfounded? Is he in a constant state of amazement? Whatever, it wears thin rather quickly. The plot does keep you on your toes and I really wanted to find out what the entire thing was about, and in that sense it was quite satisfying. In the third act...

Quirky sleeper
Offbeat? Absolutely. Quality acting? No doubt. Active attention required? Yes. This is not the type of movie you kick back and mindlessly enjoy while texting on your cell phone. "Don McKay" requires your attention. I thought it was worth the effort.

Tourettes Friday

Great fun....
We're old fans of the AtomFilms website and we're glad when we found Angry Kid seasons 1 and 2 available through Amazon digital delivery. We've watched the entire series over again, several times now, and still find these shorts funny. The making of this series is even more interesting than the show itself as it involved the use of both live action and animation techniques. One thing we did notice...there looks to be a mixup of some of the episodes with some from one season appearing twice.

Great fun
These are definitely not for kids! Since the demise of Atom Films, I was searching for a DVD of the series and was delighted to discover they were available streaming...
This early combination of stop-motion and live action filming makes for a great series. I never looked at electric toothbrushes the same after seeing these shorts. =)

Cold Sweat

Great Bronson movie!
Charles Bronson delivers in this film. The 70's "feel" is there. A time before green screens and CGI. Time when stunts and car chases were filmed, not created. The atmosphere and scenery in the South of France was a nice touch as well.
GREAT car stunts and police chases!!

A Reunion of Old Friends
Cold Sweat, 1970 film

The movie starts by a harbor in France, one fishing motor boat arrives from the sea. The captain plays cards and wins. Back home he gets a phone call and hangs up. Its not for the police. Lights out, curtains drawn! [Who is Joe Moran?] There is a noise inside the house. A stranger talks to them, but doesn't say much. "How did you find me?" [Is this actor's voice dubbed?] There is a fight, Joe wins. But he won't call the police. Joe explains his past life in Germany to Fabienne. He was part of a criminal gang. Joe tidies up, nothing on the living room floor. They carry "Vermont" away. Fabienne is fussy about a clean house. On the return they find three old friends waiting. Ross asks for Joe's boat. Will he go along? Yes. On the sea there is a boat with a Turkish flag. Opium? Joe learns about his stepdaughter.

Fausto is paged at the airport. Joe sees him, then meets a courier. They go for a ride and stop at a isolated cottage. Joe can bargain...

10 Minute Solution - Nintendo Wii

Cumbersome, Slow, Frustrating
I really like some of the fitness options that utilize the wii, however, this is not one. To begin, you can choose a quick start option, custom workouts, or set up your own fitness plan. I went to custom workouts which require you to go through a training session before you 'play'. Quite honestly, this is not a fun game--it is slow, my movements do not read well, and I never raised my heart rate, much less broke a sweat.

You do have some choice of aerobic games (which have nothing to do with cardio boxing) as well as some core work.

I am not impressed with this 'game'. I would rather work out with a fitness DVD; at least it would be more effective.

disappointing
I was disappointed with this game. I thought it would be a better workout like EA sports active. The music is poor, the moves are slow and too much stopping between sessions. Gold's Gym is a better cardio boxing and GG records your movements better than this does. Maybe after I use it more and get through all the workouts I will like it better, but right now it is a disappointment

Not so good
The game doesn't track well with your movements, making it frustrating to use. Spend a little more and get the EA Sports Active-More Workouts--which is well worth the cost.

Ruby's Dream

It's like Saturday Night Fever without the disco music and dancing.
This is Joe Pesci's first major acting role. This movie is ok if ya like movies like "The Lords of Flatbush" or "Saturday Night Fever", or "fingers". It's like a typical 70's cinematography movie but it was made in the early 80's. Good Italian acting and actors. Especially the young looking Frank Vincent from the Sopranos. Nothing extraordinary but just a good italian american movie. I found it in a grocery store for $3.99 and it was worth it to me.

In the "Atlantic City" mold
Joe Pesci's first starring role is not as a "street guy" from Little Italy but a Jewish guy from New Jersey (though the Garden state looks mysteriously more like the Big Apple throughout this venture) who wants to be an Italian lounge singer. Well, he's not Italian, and he does not perform in a Lounge - but a bowling alley - the crash of the cymbals competes with the crash of bowling pins. [Interestingly enough, JP did start out with Franki Valli's group in NJ in such a venue!]. But it's not all that sad a situation: the guy has a great band and he can sing! In fact, good enough to attract the attention of Tony Martin - who does a nice cameo.

Frank Vincent is on the scene as a buddy from the old neighborhood who went in another direction - he converts legitimate businesses into, shall we say, quasi-legitimate ones. And when Pesci's business goes flat, guess who shows up with...friends? Including an attractive lady who coincidentally wants to break into show business. Will...

Spreading Ground

Spreading Ground, Spreading Manure
If you ever wondered how certain movies get made, it sometimes helps if the writer, Ken Nakamura, is also the producer and has the resources necessary to finance the project. The British might refer to "The Spreading Ground" as a wank, whereas Americans, being more tactful on occasion, would label it a vanity production.

The plotting is beyond credibility, way, way beyond. A serial child killer is on the loose, and the embarrassed mayor, with some important city contracts on her agenda, makes a deal with the corrupt chief of police to hire a lead enforcer in the Irish mob to find and whack the killer, to hush the affair up quickly and to avoid the publicity of a trial. Thus, the chief of police is actually working against his own detectives and even leaks official leads back to the mob, a factor leading to the murders of potential witnesses. The head of the mob, named Johnny Gault (professionally played by Tom McCamus), has a nasty habit of shooting people on the slightest...

cliche ridden ...
I like Dennis Hopper and love Frederick Forrest. Neither of them are bad considering the atrocious dialogue and tired premise that they have to work with. They seem to be rolling their eyes at each other as they speak their lines. Sad to see such great talents wasted in a film filled with gratuitous violence and terrible "pop psychology" dialogue. Was there a point to this film?

I SUCK AT PLAYING GOD
Except for the F-bomb, this has all the awe and splendor of a made for TV film. Det. Ed DeLongpre (Dennis Hopper) is tasked with finding a serial child killer without any clues. Meanwhile the mayor (Elizabeth Shepherd) has brokered a deal with the local Irish mafia to find the killer (with no trial) and is using Ed's partner as a go between. Ed also has a poorly written estranged relationship with his daughter Leslie (Leslie Hope) that takes away from the story by piling on substandard writing in cliche scenes.

The opening has some good contrast scenes of the mayor performing a ground breaking ceremony and the bodies of little girls floating in the basin. As the audience we get glimpses of the killer, a man we instantly despise. The film is about Dennis Hopper piecing together clues and attempting to find the killer before the mafia does and decide they want to play god. It is an interesting crime/drama although the "touching" Hopper/ Hope scenes left something to be...

3 Way Split

Robert Vaughn is always cool...
Robert Vaughn known as Napoleon Solo from Man from Uncle is one of the coolest actors
of all time. He was also great in the Protectors TV series. I thought I'd try this out
since it was cheap. It's one of the foreign films american actors always seem to make
at some point back then. It's not the worst movie ever made by far. Too bad the quality
isn't very good or widescreen. I bought the same movie Double Cross on vhs not knowning
it was same but it was really bad quality. don't make the same mistake. The movie is
written and directed pretty good and has good plot. You can see Vaughn over dubbed his
lines it's pretty funny. It's a good bad movie to have if you like Vaughn.

Robert Vaughn got paid in Pesetas!
AKA Blue Jeans and Dynamite, Double Cross, Atraco en la jungla. Robert Vaughn is Tony, an aging jaded stuntman working in Spain, approached by old friend Luis (Simón Andreu) with a scheme to heist a $10 million gold mask from a museum. They are hindered by policemen, girlfriends, and Aztecs.
In 10 word synopsis across the web this film is referred to as an "actioner". It's actually a chase or caper film -- a cash poor Ocean's Eleven. Film has a nice low-budget Euro feel to it, with Andreu funny as a debt-ridden playboy, Katia Christine spunky and attractive as Tony's stunt-girl girlfriend, and Vaughn turning in a cold performance as the self serving Tony. Vaughn, a good actor, sort of laughs and eye rolls his way through this one. He smiles and mugs pretty much without letting us and the other actors in on the joke. He only really comes to life in a scene comparing himself to a great boxer past his prime.
I found "3-Way Split" (or "Double Cross") a lot more enjoyable...

Fun action-packed movie!
This movie has it all. Action, suspense and angry Incas! The twist at the end is just an added bonus! Nothing to be taken seriously but entertaining none the less.

The Eclipse

A Modern Ghost Story
There are many lovers and haters of this film. This is especially due (in my opinion) to the inexplicable title of the film that coincides with the laughable attempt of a vampire movie that shares the same name. This movie goes beyond any of the so-called horror movies that are on display at your local B-Buster nowadays, period. Think of classics like The Haunting and The Uninvited that are filled with subtleties that captivate the viewer while they do not feel cheap and overbearing. I can see why some feel cheated by this film since the horror aspect takes a back seat at times, but downplaying the horror is really effective in this case. There are many films that are not designed to be thrown into a specific category and this film is a perfectly blended cocktail of horror/suspense and drama/romance. Watch this film with the lights off and the sound up specifically for the scenes that will turn your skin as white as a ghost.

Jump out of your chair
It took me about six viewings before I stoped jumping out of my chair at the ghost scenes. Celebrated Irish actor Ciarin Hines is a fantastic lead character, Michael. Paring him with Iben Hejejle was an inspired match. His humanity and her warmth kept me routing for a connection. The heart thumping kissing scene did not let me down. Aiden Quinn played a great selfish, drunk, jerk,Named Nicholous. I could not stand the guy. I hope it makes it to my small town so I can see it on the big screen. Im sure the video download was only an apetiser. Enjoy, RoseAnne

Engrossing Film About Loose Ends
I did not know what to expect from The Eclipse and was surprised to find myself involved in the characters, even the annoying ones (Aiden Quinn). What could possibly recommend a film more than that?

Not expecting the unexpected, I was genuinely creeped out at least twice, something I haven't "enjoyed" in many years. I suppose that's the beauty of not knowing what you're getting into. Thankfully, shocking the audience is not what this film is about.

The Eclipse is for adults in the sense that adults tend to be more interested in character development and relationship dynamics, both of which are here beautifully realized by committed performances. Also, it does not sensationalize, being rather discrete about the supernatural elements the intrude, almost gratuitously, into the plot.

I'm happy to recommend this well-wrought drama that does what good entertainment ought to do--transport.

Stolen

Powerful and riveting!
I watched this movie expecting to see an ordinary murder mystery. Instead, I was deeply moved by the story of one man's journey to redemption and the unbearable grief a father sustains at the tragic loss of his child under circumstances that lead the fatheer to blame himself.

A policeman (actor John Hamm)investigates the discovery of a child's body in a box in the foundation of a 50 year old building and determines that the death of the child is connected to the disappearance of his small boy ten years before. Meanwhile, a parallel story is occurring some 50 years before to another man (actor Josh Lucas) and the disappearance of his small boy. In each cases the father took his eyes off of his child for a short time and in each case the child disappeared, never to be found.

Now, the detective searches for what happened to the boy in the box, hoping to somehow find his son alive. As the suspense builds and the two stories begin to head toward an intersection, the...

"Stolen" Is On Borrowed Time--An Intriguing Mystery That Fizzles Out
"Stolen," of all the disappointing movies I've seen recently, had perhaps the greatest potential to be a memorable and heartrending thriller. Shot as two interwoven stories about child abduction, the film has a pleasantly grim feel. And while the main plot points certainly aren't revelatory or new, I found the narrative shot in parallel timeframes to be quite effective and interesting. Add a top notch cast headed by Jon Hamm and Josh Lucas, and I'm not quite sure what went wrong. By no means is "Stolen" a bad movie, it just left me a bit underwhelmed. Even so, it stands as a showcase for a couple of great performances. I've long thought that Josh Lucas was one of our more underrated actors, and it's always good to see him. And Hamm, now at the height of his popularity, brings a believable intensity to the proceedings.

When Hamm's son goes missing at a rural town carnival, there are no leads in the disappearance. Hamm, a local police officer, doggedly pursues the...

Above average murder mystery that spans decades
Jon Hamm does a great job here as a detective whose son goes missing and who also ends up investigating another case of a missing boy from 50 years earlier. Much of the movie is given in flashbacks, while the present shows what a strain the detective is under because of the conflicts with his wife and his own strong feelings.

James van der Beek, a long way from Dawson's Creek, also turns in a good performance as a hired hand who knows something about the 1958 case.

Worth a look.

Class of 91

Wisdom that every Christian should explore
This is a scenario that is probably playing itself out over and over in our "brave new world" of perpetual economic recession. How do people cope with adjusting overnight from a lavish lifestyle to surviving? This movie demonstrates the process and preaches a sermon condemning materialism far better than any orator in a pulpit can accomplish. The acting was decent, very good actually, for a film with a budget of $10,000. This is a squeaky clean movie that is appropriate for even your small children. I really enjoyed seeing a message that I feel so strongly about getting relayed through a theatrical presentation. I almost gave this a five star rating. There were a few things about the film that I think could be improved, but I think it is well worth the time of someone who seeks wisdom in finances and stewardship. There was some good music and a hilarious closing montage that paralleled the song being played.

Eyeborgs

Very smart, fun sci-fil thriller
I saw Eyeborgs at its premier screening in St. Pete Beach, and it is a fun "killer robot" movie wrapped around a moral/political message. If you want to pay attention, you can catch the allegories to real-life situations equally involving privacy of citizens, and trusting the media and government. However, in essence it is a fun movie about robots being used to take over society. An independent film with a very high production value and excellent special effects. The robots, especially the "Reapers" are extremely well done. Very good performance by Adrian Paul as the Department of Homeland Defense Agent. I definitely recommend this movie for sci-fi fans.

Eyeborg Is Really a Political Movie
I bought the Blu-Ray, thinking I was getting a sci-fi film that I hadn't heard any buzz about. It IS a sci-fi movie, but what you need to know, in order to know if you would like it is that it's really a political commentary. If you took Oliver Stone, Roger Moore, the movie Hardware and Terminator: Rise of the Machines, and mixed them all together, you might get this film.

It's sometime in the unspecified future and Homeland Security has expanded. Dramatically. All surveillance cameras (public and private) have been linked together into a single "anti-terrorist" surveillance system under the "Freedom of Observation" Act, a follow-up to the Patriot Act. This surveillance has been greatly enhanced by the creation of mobile observation bots (the eyeborgs), which are ubiquitous. They aren't SUPPOSED to enter private property without a search warrant--but for law enforcement and Homeland Security officials, getting a search warrant is as automated, and takes about as long,...

Really great movie!
I too saw this movie at a premier. I also got a chance to talk with the director and his wife who wrote the screenplay. I'm not a really big fan of action movies, and this definately had a lot of action, but it was really the dialog that I felt sold the movie. It's witty, fast-paced and more importantly contained a pertinent message. The cast for the most part were great, especially Adrian Paul. He really made the movie. The special effects were good, the robots were believable. The only thing I didn't care for was the jumpy filming at the very beginning of the movie. It was intentional but I didn't think it was necessary. Either way, it didn't last long and so didn't distract from what was a very good movie. Well worth purchasing, especially if you are a fan of Adrian Paul.

missed one
It came on time and had all the movies on the disc except one. The one that I really was ordering these mystery classics in the first place. But when I received it, it had put 4 episodes of Mr and Mrs North on it instead of three and that knocked out "The Bat". Other than that, I guess it is okay. I really was looking forward to watching the movie "The Bat". So, it should be updated as to exactly what is on the disc; before someone else orders them expecting to watch "The Bat" as I was.

When I played the first disc, which turned out to be disc 2; it played very well. but, when I put disc one in; it started and froze a couple of times. I wiped it clean and tried it again. Brooklyn's Finest [Blu-ray]

Outstanding NY Police Drama
"Brooklyn's Finest" is a remarkably entertaining and well-acted police drama from director Antoine Fuqua, who also directed the also outstanding police drama, "Training Day."

The film focuses on three very different Brooklyn cops over the course of a week. Richard Gere plays Eddie, a hardened veteran just a week away from retirement. He has nightmares, he's separated from his wife, and he's just biding his time until his retirement. Ethan Hawke, the hero of "Training Day, plays a narcotics detective desperate to finance a new home to give a better life to his wife, children, and twins on the way. Don Cheadle plays Tango, an undercover cop, who is so deep undercover that he forgets who he really is, and to make matters worse, he now has to setup a high-level drug dealer who saved his life while he was undercover in prison.

These examples of Brooklyn's Finest are all living on the edge, and they all go over the edge one way or another. The acting from these three...

A Good Cop Drama With A Great Cast
Brooklyn's Finest is about three cops working in different units in the NYC police department, who struggle with the perils of the crime-infested streets, particularly the drug trafficking operations.

Ethan Hawke delivers probably his best performance to date. He plays Sal Procida, a NYPD narcotics officer who's a devout Catholic with mostly good intentions, but is plagued with his own demons as he chases after ruthless drug dealers while struggling to support more kids at home than he can afford on a cop's salary.

Don Cheadle plays the role of "Tango", an ambitious undercover cop working double-duty on a drug sting operation. He's burned out and wants out of the game before it's too late, but he's in too deep and the powers that be on the corrupt police force won't let him escape. Ellen Barkin plays the hard-ass boss lady in charge of the sting operation. She has Cheadle by the balls and couldn't care less about his survival.

Richard Gere plays...

Fans of "The Wire" Will Enjoy Brooklyn's Finest
It's been almost a decade since Director Antoine Fuqua treated us to Training Day, and Brooklyn's Finest proves that he still has the goods. While not destined to become the fan classic that Denzel helped deliver, Brooklyn's Finest offers up an excellent cast and an explosive ending.

Don Cheadle, as an undercover cop, gives a terrific performance while continuing to prove himself as one of Hollywood's most underrated actors. It was also amazing to watch Ethan Hawke as a corrupt officer, but unlike Training Day's Alonzo, you really feel his vulnerability. He's thrown into a pressure cooker early into the film, with tension so real that you can almost touch it. If you're a diehard fan of HBO's The Wire like myself, you're going to love the casting of Michael K. Williams (Omar Little) and Hassan Johnson (Wee-Bey) as Brooklyn dealers, and Isiah Whitlock Jr (Senator Clay "Sheeee*t" Davis) as a city investigator. Wesley Snipes gives a great New Jack City throwback...

JFK: Reckless Youth

Only 1/2 the Mini-Series!
Previous reviewer is correct, this release contains only the second half of the mini-series. The box clearly states 183 minutes, yet the one disc contains only 91. It should have been a two disc set. Someone at MPI really blew it on this one. The film film itself is not bad...

Only Half The Story
This much delayed release of the 1992 mini-series is one that I hade long awaited. However, my expectations have turned to dismay as the disc appears only to contain the second half of the show.

Despite the packaging and disc listing a running time of 180 minutes, my copy, purchased in Cambridge, Mass, runs for merely 91 minutes.

Inquiries to the manufacturer have proven to be less than helpful, and I am therefore unable to recommend a purchase of what should have been a welcome addition to the DVD market for this title.

I look forward to the rectification of this over-sight by the disc manufacturer, but fear that it may be a long time coming.

The DVD is now the complete movie - it's been corrected
I bought the DVD when it first came out and just got around to watching it (it IS 3 hours, and I'd seen it when it originally aired), and discovered I had a defective DVD. Thanks to reading the below comments, I knew it was a manufacturer's error and contacted the manufacturer's customer service, asking if the problem had been corrected and, if so, would they exchange it. Within the hour, they sent me an email requesting an address to replace the disc. I've just watched the new and improved DVD, so buy with confidence! (And the movie is really well done.)

Legal Eagles

3 and 1/2 stars....Something About Debra
This review refers to the DVD(Universal/2003 release) edition of "Legal Eagles"...

Okay, okay,...so let's say you are entertaining beings from another planet. You are telling them about all the great talent we have here in the world of film. Included among that talent would of course be Robert Redford and Debra Winger. "Legal Eagles", although a fun, sometimes thrilling, and entertaining view, may not be the one, you would want to use as an example of all that talent! Maybe it was the chemistry(or lack of), maybe it was two great, but basically dramatic talents doing romantic comedy together, or perhaps the storyline, that mixes romantic comedy with a murder mystery, but probably a little of each of those things, keep this duo from being the shining example of what we expect from them on the screen.

The story is a complex but good one. It's a serio-comic look at some dirty dealings in the Art world with New York City as the centerpiece of all the action. An...

Low key but enjoyable
This is Ivan Reitman's first film after his mega hit "Ghostbusters".

Some will even recognize an exterior or two that was used in both films.

I will always remember this film because I got a pass to a preview screening for it from my art teacher. This was before preview screenings were done as much as they were now by radio stations and more. It was a bit of a special thing in my mind.

I remember enjoying it on a interplay between Redford and Winger level and thinking of it as a good but not great movie.

About a month later, the film opened to mediocre reviews and business.

After that, the movie would turn up on TV and when I caught it, I found myself seeing it thorugh to the end (only to be surprised when the TV version had an altered ending).

Anyway, Legal Eagles became that "old comfortable shoe" of a movie that when it popped up on cable (and for a while it often did)I would go "ahhhh" and keep on watching.

I would've gotten it on VHS, but I was all too aware of how...

Great movie.
I'm a 17 year old movie fan, and just to put my two cents in, I think this movie is awesome. It's not well known, but even so, I watch it every time it's on television. Thumbs up.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers, Chapter 2

Bakugan movie
This movie is based on the early morning cartoon Bakugan Brawlers, and resolves many of the questions my grandson had about Bakugans. He throughly enjoyed watching this movie, and will watch it many times over. Well worth the price in entertainment value.

Great gift for a boy!
I got this DVD as a birthday gift for my son's Bakugan theme party. He loves it so much that he's been watching it day and night. Product arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Good series
Easier to buy these then collect off cable. Getting them in order helps the series make more sense. Looking forward to getting the rest

Solitary Man

Should Be More Than Just a Solitary Success
The film follows Michael Douglas as he comes to grips, or doesn't, with his age and the fact that his personal life as passed him by. The movie begins with Douglas receiving the news that he needs some test performed on his heart because his doctor has some concerns. Time then flashes forward six years, where Douglas is now divorced with a daughter in her early 30s (played expertly by Jenna Fischer), a grandson who is five, and a girlfriend (Mary Louise Parker) who he is using for her father's power. Hints are dropped that Douglas was involved in some sort of scam that caused him to lose his extremely profitable business and threw him into a scandal that destroyed his reputation. The rising action begins when Douglas must escort his girlfriend's daughter to his alma mater for the weekend. While in Boston, Douglas makes a terrible decision that threatens to unravel whatever life he has left.

Though this film received little attention, I thought that it was absolutely...

A Great Cast And A Fearless Michael Douglas Headline This Sleeper About A Loathsome Lothario
No one does loathsome charm like Michael Douglas! In a career filled with oily characters, Ben Kalmen is easily one of the more reprehensible creations that Douglas has fleshed out. Seemingly without one redemptive character trait, "Solitary Man" doesn't shy away from the ugliness, desperation, and fear that fuel Kalmen's self destructive bent. And as much as you may despise the man, Douglas manages to convey enough humanity and humor to keep you hoping for more. It's an intricately balanced role and Douglas deftly handles its challenges. If you're not with Douglas for good and bad, than you will likely find "Solitary Man" quite unpleasant. Douglas had me, however, and backed by a solid and wildly appealing supporting cast--"Solitary Man" became an amusingly direct look at a man dealing with his own mortality.

With a brief introduction, we meet Douglas as a successful man facing a possible health crisis. Fast forward six years. Douglas is now broke, unemployed and...

Fascinating Drama-Comedy
"Solitary Man," stars Michael Douglas, who plays Ben Kalman, a middle-aged man whose annual physical triggers a self-centered need to recreate his youth. He throws off all responsibilities in his life. He was a very successful luxury car dealer, happily married and set for life. The doctor's recommendation to have more tests on his heart shocks him visibly with fear of dying. He does not want to know more or take tests to find out what the diagnosis is.

Over the next six-and-a-half years, Ben transforms into an unappealing pathetic soul as one by one friends and family cut him off. He continues begging people for money and jobs, plus finds time to get into complicated sexual situations with a friend of his daughter as well as the daughter of the woman he is currently dating. His career in a mess and he is a loser with every woman he meets. He cannot find pleasure in positive things, and in the end he is alone, a "Solitary Man."

Somehow Douglas makes this...

Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue

Steaming in the wrong direction...
The last special released in the Thomas franchise was Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails, the first fully-animated feature with our #1 tank engine. I was impressed how it was down-to-earth, kept things as realistic as possible, and showed real character development and personality, leading for good morals for children to learn. It was everything a parent and child would want, instead of something bland and colorful that parents could sit their kids in front of while they went off to do other things.

Misty Island Rescue, on the other hand, is none of those things.

The film starts off with Thomas helping to build the brand new Sodor Search and Rescue Center. Special wood from far away, called "Jobi wood", is needed to build it. Diesel tries to take the wood himself, but ends up almost crashing; Thomas saves him, but all the wood is lost in the sea. Sir Topham Hatt is proud of him, and as a...

Kinda Different, if you know what I mean.
I'm raising my twin grandsons who will soon be three and we own just about every "Thomas The Train" DVD out. I had been waiting for several months for the release of "Misty Island Rescue," with full understanding that, unlike the old offerings, this would be 100% animation. The actual DVD is of decent quality, however, the storyline is as strange as it can get. THIS IS A RATHER DARK FEELING DVD,(not quite Tim Burton, but headed in that direction). By that I mean it lacks the warmth I generally associate with Thomas stories throughout the years. Aside from several familiar characters, it doesn't even feel like it's taking place in Sodor. (A real twist, when you discover that Misty Island and Sodor are actually, but confusingly connected.)

If I had to come up with one word to describe this particular Thomas The Train DVD, it would have to be "WEIRD!!!" This is confirmed by Twins who don't want to view it again. Mind you, they always watch every one of the other DVD's again...

2 year old says "Meh."
This is not a bad story, but it drags. It could easily fit into half an hour and be more enjoyable. There are some nice moments of friendship and good values, my son really likes Cranky the Crane and Whiff, and I do like the new animation and the way the characters do more of their own dialog than the old style-- it develops the characters well. However, there were too many repetitions of Thomas's "I make good decisions" mantra, too long spent dithering around on Misty Island with creepy/kooky Bash and Dash, and too many truly suspenseful/dangerous situations, which all combined to make my 2yo son simultaneously anxious and bored. Not what I hope for when I pop in a Thomas movie! Perhaps for an older child it would be more engaging, and we'll stick to the shorter classic episodes until he's ready for longer movies. I'm glad I tried the Amazon video on demand version before buying it, that's a great way to preview without the expense and cutter of owning yet another movie that...

Being Michael Madsen

A lot to like here
Being Michael Madsen is a fun mockumentary and satirical commentary on media message distortion and tabloids.

Madsen (along with the others) leads the film in a mock interview detailing the events that led him to hiring his own team of filmmakers to catalog a paparazzi's life in the same way his life has been cataloged and intruded upon. The message here is that you can make anyone into the character you want them to be in the mass media and the general public will eat it up. As Madsen states in the film "If you read something enough times, you start to believe it's real."

What I find most humorous about it all is the way Madsen exploits this flaw in mass media while also doing the same with "Being Michael Madsen". The film is an exposition of tabloid distortion while it is really no different in-of-itself. We get to see the tables turned on the man spreading rumors about Madsen in what is presented as setting the record straight; really, it is only rewriting it...

"Michael has been perfecting that persona of 'badboy' since he was 12."
Before Being Michael Madsen was making rounds in the festival circuit, two young gals came into the store where I work asking for ANY DVD that starred Madsen. "He's just the coolest, hottest guy ever!" they gushed. I informed them that I knew of a film called Being Michael Madsen that would be released some day, and their eyes just lit up, making sure they wrote that title down. I still smile when I think of that, now having seen the film when it was screened at the Dances With Films festival in June of 2009 in Los Angeles. I can now say I agree with those gals, and while this film seems to be about Michael it's obvious everyone else is getting their share of the fun. He has some good competition with his sister Virginia here as well. Michael is so cool you want him to be your pal, though you might get the feeling he still could punch you. But you'd appreciate that he did.

Director/writer Michael Mongillo has done something I've always wished would happen: turn the tables...

Laugh until you're on the floor funny
Michael Mongillo broke the mold making this film. It is one of the few laugh-out-loud films that had me trying to catch my breath by the end. I was lucky enough to see a screening in Denver a few years ago, and I continue to talk about this film. It is an amazing take on celebrity life and some of the best material comes from Madsen's own friends & family. I've ordered my copy early & can't wait to see the film again. It is amazing!!

The Prophets Game

Dennis Hopper suspense/action thriller with an original plot
The Prophet's Game has a unique plot with lots of action. The ending however could have been better. The game itself involves a game master (the killer) giving out obscure clues to all of the players. The players attempt to find out what dead celebrity the clues are referring so they can stay in the game. Eventually it is discovered by one of the players that some of the dead celebrities were not dead when the clue was given to them.

The method of operation turns out be a copycat of a serial killer in Seattle, who now-retired police detective Swan (Dennis Hopper) supposedly solved by killing the culprit. The killer lures Swan back into the mix with postacards and phone calls. Swan decides to help the LA police who definately do not want his help.

The movie spirals into a personal conflict between Swan and the Killer and several celebrities die along the way. The confrontation scene in the end is OK. The identity of the killer will suprise you, but the killer's final...

I WANT TO PLAY
The movie starts with a 1969 flashback before the credits. Any horror mystery watcher worth their salt know who the killer is before the credits is over. It is just a matter of figuring out which person that is years later. 10 minutes into the movie, you should know why they are killing. It is just that predictable.

Knife stabs- When you play the Psycho sound track and make cartoonish squishy sounds with each plunge are we to assume this is a comedy?

The killer sends Dennis Hopper a post card and calls him at home. Apparently the killer knows him. He gives Hopper the first clue..."I'll leave the light on for you." Immediately our minds race...Is it Tom Bodett?

There is an Internet game being played called the Prophet Game, based on kid's game I was not aware existed. The game consists of riddles and players are pitted against each other. Patrick Thomas, an admirer of Curly plays a character reminiscent of the more disgusting Curly Joe...

decent Hopper thriller
The world seems to be separated into two groups of people.... those who like Dennis Hopper and those who don't. I am from the former rather than the latter so whenever he turns up in something new in theaters or on DVD, I check it out. Prophet's game, for some reason, is one movie that I didn't know about in its original release. If we are to believe there are as many serial killers out there as hollywood wishes for us to believe, society as a whole is in trouble. Sick of the serial killer movies as I am, I must say that Prophet's game is a very taut and well done movie overall, and that's great considering it was a straight to DVD release. Direction is good and the acting is also good, but the story could have used one more rewrite before going celluloid. Thats not to say the writing is bad, but some dialogue is questionable as is the case with many low budget films. Predictability wise, even fans of the genre will be surprised with the ending as it didn't end the way I predicted,...

Catch a Fire

'Catch a Fire' fails to ignite...
I had high hopes for this film; I mean I really wanted it to blow my mind. I'm a huge fan of Derek Luke and feel that he is a truly gifted actor, but despite his terrific performance this movie to me really failed to elevate past mundane popcorn fluff. I wasn't struck as I feel I could have or should have been beings the subject matter the movie embraces. I don't know if I'm alone in feeling that the movie came off a bit `made-for-TV' or `straight-to-video'. That was just my opinion I guess.

The acting was top notch, especially on the part of the two male leads. Derek Luke gives so much humanity to Patrick that you're rooting for him 100%, but to me it was Tim Robbins who stole my attention. He did such a brilliant job of making Nic Vos seem almost caring and concerned. He did so well at this that at the end, when the real Patrick Chamusso is talking about Vos being a monster I found myself thinking "was he really that bad?"...yes he was, and Tim Robbins is really that good...

Engaging Story and Interesting Performances
South Africa, 1980.

Patrick (Derek Luke, "Antwone Fisher ", "Glory Road"), a young father with a wife and two children, lives in a small house with his mother. He is very happy and has a good job as a foreman at a local refinery. In his off hours, he coaches a ragtag group of children in football. One day, traveling back from a wedding, they are stopped and questioned regarding an explosion at some railroad tracks. Patrick wants nothing to do with politics, because he knows it will jeopardize his family and his job. Later, Patrick takes his football team to a match and they win, so he stays over with them to compete in the finals. That evening, another explosion occurs at the plant where he works. Nic Voss (Tim Robbins), the head of the anti-terrorist team, brings him in for questioning. The same evening, Patrick visits an old girlfriend and his illegitimate son, and then lies about it, making him a suspect. Unable to get anywhere, Voss and his team take Patrick's wife in...

Best "based on a true story" movie this year
Catch a Fire centers around the true story of Patrick Chamusso, a South African man who works as a plant foreman and quietly keeps to his family and to himself, not getting involved in the protests and demonstrations against apartheid. But when a terrorist attack effects the plant where he works and he and his wife are brought in and tortured to get information, he realizes that there is no way of simply avoiding confrontation and joins a terrorist group.

What's interesting about the film is how it presents two sides of the story, although, admittedly Chamusso is the central character. Tim Robbins plays Nic Vos, an anti-terrorist authority figure. We see Vos with his family and Robbins almost brings a sense of humanity to the character that makes you really see a man trapped in a point-of-view that he can't escape, and committing terrible acts because of this.

Derek Luke does a tremendous job as Chamusso and throughout the film his intensity is contagious, adding...

Talk to Me (Widescreen Edition)

Cheadle and Ejiofor turn "Talk" into grace and elegance!
I had heard an hour long expose on the life of Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene and Dewey Hughes on National Public Radio and was fascinated by the story of their extraordinary partnership/friendship at WOL-AM radio.Arrested for armed robbery and handed a ten -year prison sentence,Petey becomes the disc jockey at Lorton Prison.Upon early release, Petey marches into WOL for a job. With Hughes reluctant help Petey becomes the voice and conscience for Black Americans on talk radio. He is soulful, insightful, many times drunk!...... Interesting story!

Well, this story has become a film to be reckoned with, and in the hands of acting greats Don Cheadle as Petey and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Hughes TALK TO ME is turned into the finest bit of on-screen time by two men this year. These two gentlemen KNOW how to handle their characters. Two finer performances, I dare say, will not be seen this year that are portrayed with such depth, skill and finesse.LET'S TALK OSCARS and GLOBES HERE...

Before there was Howard there was Petey
Fantastic! In all ways! You just can't go wrong with Don Cheadle. He's that good. I love seeing the 60's and 70's as they were such a potent time in our country and I never tire of the clothes and styles of speech from that era. Any great movie captures the emotions of that time as this one did. Love watching the birth of trend setters, too. This character was smooth and abrasive at the same time. That's an enjoyable quality to witness. Petey stuck to his guns throughout a life filled with controversy. He never wavered. That's admirable. When the two main characters acknowledge what their friendship means to each other, it's powerful. A friend had been trying to get me to watch this for months. Glad I finally listened!

'Talk to Me' Has Much To Say
The Kasi Lemmons-lensed "Talk to Me," starring Don Cheadle as notorious shock jock and television personality Ralph "Petey" Greene, is an absorbing, way to spend two hours. A historical drama laced with sharp doses of comedy, the film depicts the roller coaser ride of Greene's life and provides the perfect vehicle for the incredible Cheadle to sink his teeth into.

In mid-1960's Washington D.C. Greene is five years into a sentence at Lorto Reformatory for armed robbey and already infamous as the prison disc jockey when he crosses paths with Dewey Hughes, portrayed by the engaging Chiwetel Ejiofor, a representative of local AM radio station WOL who is leaving the facility after visiting his brother.

"Your brother said y'all need a new DJ at that radio station," Greene says to Hughes. "Hey, I'm your man!"

"You're in prison," he replies.

"It's a minor challenge."

Through smart maneuvering Greene is able to procure an early release,...

Slap Shot 3: The Junior League

STINKER!
What a waste of money. Even my 11 year old hockey player hated it. The story line is really bad and the acting is worse. I thought it would be a fun, cleaned-up version of Slap Shot, since we won't let him watch that yet, but at least on par with Slap Shot. It should be called "Slap Me Silly if I Buy This."

worst movie ever
Literally wish Icould have these 2 hours of my life back. It was awful. Just awful. The first one was amazing, second was pretty good the third is just the worst thing to ever be on my TV- save your money.

Classic Family Adventures: Lost in the Barrens / Baker's Hawk / Rugged Gold / Pony Express Rider

FAMILY SAFE MOVIES
I enjoyed all four movies. Each is a refreshing down-to-earth story about life that can be watched with children. According to the movie, "Rugged Gold" is based on a true story, which exemplifies female determination and drive to survive. Regarding "Baker's Hawk", I've enjoyed every Clint Walker western I've seen. Clint's characters are good role models -- mild mannered, strong, competent, and focused on completing each task. I'd like to get "Night of the Grizzly" when it comes out on dvd. "Lost in the Barrens" is about two teenagers, a native American (Canada) and his traveling companion, in survival mode on their way to becoming men. "Pony Express Rider" is about a nasty spoiled son of a wealthy rancher and a boy who became a man to help bring justice to the spoiled son who murdered his father. These are NOT high quality remastered dvd's but I do not sit close enough to my 42" lcd tv to matter. For the price I am not complaining.

Rugged Gold, and Lost in the Barrens
I fell in love with Farley Mowat's book, Lost in the Barrens, when I was just a girl. Growing up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I loved imagining what it would be like to match my wits against the rugged wild winter north of a place much more challenging, the Barrenlands of northern Canada. The movie follows the book fairly well, although it adds some details like the ceremony for Awassin becoming a man, and instead of the boys hunting during the great caribou migration, it had just one caribou "giving himself" for them to live, which wasn't in the book at all and seemed unlikely. I wish the movie had spent more time dealing with the actual survival issues, such as how hard it was to build the cabin & get a working fire, and so on, instead of the interpersonal dynamics as much. I am also a fan of Canada's "Survivorman" Les Stroud, so I would have liked more of the survival aspects of this adventure. In the...

Nice family movies.
Great scenery, good music themes. My favorites were Baker's Hawk, nice to see Burl And Clint Walker after so long, and Lost In The Barrens. The Pony Express Rider had good old time western stars also. The Alaska senery was breath-taking.

Great fun
We LOVE this DVD! My sons (ages 6 & 8) said they like it because it is funny and my daughter (age 3) said she likes it because of the music. Martin Short as the voice of the Cat is fabulous. My kids have watched the DVD over and over since we got it. I have always loved the book version of The Cat in the Hat - we've been reading it to our kids for years. I think they did an excellent job getting that same "feel" in the show. The music is fun and the educational aspect is great. I also really appreciate the fact that the show didn't teach my kids a single insult or unkind word :). My whole family is happy to recommend The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! : Wings and Things!

My 2 & 4 year old liked it!
My boys LOVED this movie. My 4 year old is very much into repetition and likes to watch shows over and over until we can convince him to move onto another one and this one has been the top pick for 2 weeks now! He loves to follow The Cat in the Hat on his magical adventures and learn about all the animals. His favorite episode is about Tucker the Hermit Crab who has outgrown his shell and so the crew set out to help him find the perfect new shell. I love that he is being exposed to lessons that would be hard to teach, or things I just might not have thought to talk about much such as bats being able to find food and communicate at night through sound or how honey is made! This DVD was a great educational resources as well as being very entertaining to both boys.
